Thai-Chinese Mahayana Buddhist Temple in Bangkok
Buddhism has a long and storied history in Thailand, where the predominant religion is Theravada Buddhism, or Southern Transmission. Great Buddha Monastery contributes to this rich culture by bringing the mind-teaching of Chan from Mahayana Buddhism, or Northern Transmission, into Thailand.
Great Buddha Monastery is currently located next to Rama IX Hospital in Bangkok. The monastery includes a meditation hall, lecture hall, and library, etc. The Great Majesty Hall is pure and solemn, offering a place for the public to practice meditation, study Buddhism, and purify their minds.
Great Buddha Monastery regularly offers daytime and evening meditation classes, chanting classes, and free courses in Thai and Chinese. The goal of these classes is to integrate Buddhism into daily life, and to calm, purify, and illuminate our minds through meditation. Through guided practice, everyone can understand their true nature and discover lifes true meaning.
Great Buddha Monastery curriculum offers four levels of study, namely elementary, intermediate, advanced, and sutra study. The main contents students will learn in each level are:
How to meditate, what is the Buddha? Four Noble Truths, eightfold path, etc.
Twelve links of dependent origination, the six paramitas (bodhisattva practices leading to buddhahood)
Basic teachings of Mahayana Buddhism, Advanced meditation theory, thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, The Eight Realizations of Great Beings, The Essence of Mahayana Practice
The Sutra on Impermanence, The Sutra of Forty-Two Chapters
Weekly practice: The Medicine Buddha
